  • MuscleNerd Backporting PS3 Jailbreak to iPhone

3, Dev Team, News, PS3, apple, iPhone, iPhone iTunes, jailbreak, musclenerd, playstation, sony | Sunday September 5 2010 3:32 pm | Comments Off

A few days ago an open-source PlayStation 3 jailbreak was released. With a chunk of code and an AVR USB board, users would jailbreak their PS3.

In the video above MuscleNerd showed that he was able to port to the iPhone rather than the need for the AVR dev board. This may mean that a PS3 jailbreak via iPhone is right around the corner:

Steve Jobs: iPod touch more popular than Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined

Games, News, ds, gaming, iPhone, ipod touch, nintendo, psp, sony | Thursday September 2 2010 5:57 am | Comments Off

Yesterday during Apple’s annual Special Music Event Steve Jobs announced that the iPod touch was more popular than both Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP… combined. Jobs also said more than 1.5 billion games and entertainment apps have been downloaded by iPod touch devices to date.

However, as every gadget and gaming blog has since pointed out, while iPod touch has sold in the mid tens of millions of units (Apple doesn’t often break them out), Nintendo’s DS series has sold 132 million all on its lonesome, so take this with a “biggest mobile company” type grain of salt.

iPod touch outselling PSP and DS in games, not systems

Apps, Games, News, Steve Jobs, devices, free, iPhone, ios, nintendo, price, sales, sony, stat, systems | Wednesday September 1 2010 2:05 pm | Comments Off
During this morning's event, Steve Jobs tossed out the factoid that the iPod touch was trouncing traditional handheld gaming, claiming that the system had sold more than Nintendo and Sony's portables combined. If, like us, you thought that meant Apple had sold more devices than traditional game makers, then Steve was wrong -- he mentioned in the same event that Apple has shipped 120 million iOS devices, and while that's very impressive, it's not quite as big as the 125 million Nintendo DS systems the Japanese company had sold around the world as of January. That doesn't even count the 62 million PSP units Sony has sold worldwide. In terms of gaming devices sold, Apple has a long ways to go.

But Steve can't have been that wrong -- he said that the iPod touch had sold more than Nintendo or Sony combined. He can't be off by over 60 million, right? It's more likely that he meant software sales. There have been about 718 million DS games sold in the system's history, and about 252 million games sold on the PSP. And there have been 6.5 billion downloads of iOS apps so far (with 1.5 billion of those being game and entertainment apps). When you compare the numbers that way, yes, Apple is far outselling Nintendo and Sony in terms of game sales. But of course, iOS apps tend to be much cheaper than Sony and Nintendo's software (if not free), and gamers could probably argue all day about the difference in average quality of the two platforms.

Either way, Steve was stretching the truth a little bit on that stat. Apple has done a terrific job making inroads on portable gaming (some of it even without planning to do so), but the Cupertino company has a little way to go yet before it starts really competing with the established console manufacturers.

Update: A few commenters suggest that Apple has sold more iPod touches than both other systems combined recently, as in the last quarter or so. But the other two devices are a few years older than the oldest iPod touch, so that doesn't seem like a great comparison either. Again, Apple has made really incredible strides into handheld gaming, but the company isn't quite overwhelming its competitors in this market yet.

Found Footage: Sony attacks iPhone gaming in new PSP ad

GameCastle, News, app store, appstore, game castle, hot-shots-golf, iPhone, marcus, psp, sony, twisted-metal | Tuesday August 17 2010 6:00 pm | Comments Off

Well, when you get big enough, there's a target painted on your back. Sony has gone after the iPhone and the App Store in a new ad for their PSP gaming system. As you can see above, the ad comes from the "Marcus PSP" series (starring 30 Rock's hilarious Bobb'e J. Thompson as an advice-giving kid), and calls out iPhone gamers for not playing "big boy games." The ad then shows games like Twisted Metal: Head-On and Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, bragging that they are all available for $9.99 (though the small text confirms that they are $9.99 each, not together).

Very interesting. Truth be told, the ad is kind of weak -- it doesn't tell you to not own an iPhone, just that phones are better meant for texting and calling. But the biggest attack point here is that iPhone game developers are amateurs compared to Sony's stable, with a Doodle-esque "Game Castle" going up against high profile franchises. Nintendo has pretty much ignored iPhone gaming in the past, admitting that Apple is an eventual enemy, but generally staying unconcerned about the App Store, even as its share of handheld gaming grows. But this is the first time a competitor has publicly acknowledged the competition to consumers, and given Sony's rough history with the PSP lately, it looks a lot like a guppy trying to bite a shark.

New Sony PSP ad takes aim at iPhone

News, gaming, iPhone, iphone vs psp, psp, sony, sony vs apple | Tuesday August 17 2010 5:09 am | Comments Off

Sony PSP ad targets Apple iPhone gaming

Sony has released a new ad for their PSP gaming system and it takes aim squarely at Apple’s iPhone and iOS gaming.

“That [iPhone] ain’t built for big boy games”, the latest PSP spokeskid, Marcus Rivers, says to a goofy looking guy playing “Lame Castle”. “That’s built for texting your grandma and calling your girl.”

Rivers then shows off a few older, $9.99 catalog titles, and calls the goofy guy to drive home the $9.99 price point before hitting the tag line: “step your game up.”

Obviously this acknowledges the growing competition from iPhone, especially the low price point of iOS games.

And since goofy guy can text grandma, call his girl, and play great new games without having to lug around a second, gigantic device — one that’s still bound to physical media and hasn’t seen a real hardware update since before Marcus was born — it might not be a winning strategy for Sony. (That Android PSP phone, however…)

Video after the break. Does it make any of you want to carry around an iPhone and a PSP?

Some Great Apps That Integrate Your iPhone with Your Gaming Consoles

360, Microsoft, News, PS3, PlayStation 3, Wii, featured, iPhone, ipad, ipad apps, iphone apps, nintendo, sony, xbox 360 | Monday August 16 2010 6:11 am | Comments Off

Last week we spotted an iPhone App that integrates your iDevice with your Wii over wifi. It looks pretty cool, so iSmashPhone thought it would be fun to look around for similar Apps for all systems. The Apps aren't essential, but they are neat and can be useful.

    PSN Go

    PS3

PSN Go is the App that lets users track their PlayStation Network friends, view their trophies and see what they are currently playing.

Users can also check out profiles and view the Games Catalog, which lists games' details and screenshots.

Meanwhile, Trophy fans can view video guides. These open through the YouTube player, and show you how to earn some of those harder-to-find Trophies. It costs $1.99, so it won't break the bank. Oh yeah, it also supports the iPhone 4's sharper resolution. Check it out here: PSN Go

    WiiPhoto

    Wii

We found this one earlier this week and thought it was kind of cool. Because the Wii's online social network isn't nearly as expansive as those on the 360 and the PS3, there isn't as much to do as far as adding friends and checking their status. This App connects your devices for something else entirely. It adds some fun functionality. With it, you can share iPhone, Flickr, Facebook and other networking photos  as well as those on your Mac with your television screen via your Wii all over wifi. Check out the video.

It's the priciest of the Apps at $2.99, but it's fun for entertaining family. Read more here: WiiPhoto

    Add Xbox LIVE Friend

    Xbox

This is one of the Apps we found developed by the users over at 1337pwn.com. All of their Apps were free, but this one was the most useful. It's a quick way to add friends on Xbox LIVE. It's great for adding people quickly when away from a computer or console.

You simply launch the App and enter their Gamertag. The App is nothing fancy; entering a name simply launches Mobile Safari and sends a friend request via Xbox.com. Keep in mind that you will need to have logged onto your Xbox.com profile at least once before on Mobile Safari in order to make the shortcut take you directly to your page.

If anything, their App is worth checking out. It's free, here: Add Xbox LIVE Friend.

Let us know some of your favorite Apps for integrating your  iDevice with your console experience. Maybe we missed one that is worth looking at.

Report: Sony Ericsson Working on PSP Phone?

Above Image is a mock-up by Engadget based on descriptions they've heard

Sony Ericsson may be working on a new gaming platform that combines elements of the PSP and a mobile phone.

According to rumors, the device is said to look like a mashup of the Samsung Captivate and Sony's PSPgo. They say it will have a a slide-out controller (similar to the  mock-up Engadget put together above) where slide-out phones usually place the keyboard. The PSP's analog nub would be replaced by some sort of trackpad for analog controls.

Here's what's rumored to be included:

    • 3.7 to 4.1 inch WVGA (or better) screen
    • Will run on Android 3.0 (Gingerbread)
    • Includes standard PSP buttons
    • 5MP camera (though Engadget says it may not be final)
    • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
    • Will be PlayStation-branded
    • Future titles may include augmented reality features

Engadget seems pretty sure about this rumor. If there sources are right, we could be seeing a PSP Phone as soon as October of this year. That seems a little soon, but surprises have happened. We haven't seen any photo leaks yet. We aren't sure about trying to market a phone solely as a gaming device. Even Apple was careful to avoid that with the iPhone. And who can forget the N-Gage?

iPhone is 3% of handset unit volume, 2x profit of RIM, Nokia, Sony combined. iPad next?

News, Nokia, RIM, apple vs nokia, apple vs rim, iPhone, ipad, market share, profit share, sony | Wednesday July 21 2010 7:54 pm | Comments Off

While iPhone accounts for only 3% of handset market share by unit volume, Finacial Times reveals some Goldman’s numbers that show it’s set to capture a stunning 2X the profit share of Nokia, RIM, and Sony — combined.

And Goldman only showed those numbers by way of saying how enthusiastic they are about iPad doing the same thing to the PC industry. That sounds crazy, but iPad almost equalled Mac sales numbers this quarter and while its margins are less than the Mac’s, they’re higher than the razor-thin netbook and bargain basement PC industry where much of the volume rests.

TiPb’s been saying for a while Apple only cared about market share as much as it meant increased profit share. Looks like that’s working out for them.

Video: The Grip of Death, Not Just Limited to the iPhone 4

Ericsson, Gadgets, News, grip of death, iPhone, iphone-4, signal problems, sony | Monday July 5 2010 6:15 pm | Comments Off

The Grip of Death has become a widely-reported issue with the iPhone 4. For those who don't know about it, the Grip of Death is the name given to an issue in which holding the iPhone improperly causes attenuation of the phone's signal.

Unfortunately, left-handed iPhone owners are the ones having the problems, because of the way the phone fits in the left-hand when held.

Apple has said that all phones experience some kind of signal drop when held, but it has become a popular story with the iPhone 4. Whether a bad design choice, or internet hype, the reports of signal drop are true.

However, this isn't limited to the iPhone 4. The above video of what is what the poster calls the "Ericsson Grip of Death." In it, he shows a, TEMS Ericsson K800i test unit being given the "Grip of Death" the result is a severe drop in signal.

He goes on to say that his point isn't that the iPhone shouldn't have a problem, but that it's not alone when it comes to such issues.

Remember that Apple also recently somewhat explained the issue by saying that they botched the way the iPhone 4 calculates its reception. While many say that this is not a fix, it will definitely give users a more accurate representation of their level of signal.
