    Post pictures to Tumblr Quickr

News, Pictures, iPhone, ipad, quickr, tumblr | Monday May 17 2010 9:30 am | Comments Off

Quickr is a $0.99US iPhone app to take pictures and quickly post them to your Tumblr account. Here's the simplest explanation I can give for how Quickr lives up to its name:

Steps necessary to take a picture and post it through the Tumblr app:

    1. launch Tumblr app
    2. tap post (assuming you have the dashboard shown by default)
    3. tap photo
    4. tap "take new photo"
    5. take picture

Steps necessary to email a picture to Tumblr from the iPhone camera app:

    1. launch camera
    2. take picture
    3. tap button to see photo library
    4. tap arrow at bottom left
    5. tap "email photo" (wait for Mail to launch)
    6. tap 'to'
    7. fill in email address for your Tumblr

Steps to post a picture using Quickr

    1. launch Quickr
    2. take picture

Quickr will let you decide if you want to store the picture in your iPhone's library or not (you can set a default yes/no and then change very easily it for individual pictures from inside the app). As of v.1.0 posting to "sub-Tumblrs" is not supported, but I spoke with the developer and he is planning to include support for that in the future. He also mentioned that a bug exists in 1.0 which prevents the app from running on an iPad. A fix has already been submitted to the App Store. (Even though the iPad doesn't have a camera, Quickr will eventually allow you to upload pictures from your photo library on the iPad.)

The bulk of the pictures that my wife and I take with our iPhones are intended to be posted to Tumblr, so Quickr is going to get a lot of use in our house.

    iPhone modded with titanium back

News, Pictures, back, brushed-metal, cover, engadget, gallery, hardware, iPhone, martin-schrotz, mod, revision, titanium | Wednesday February 24 2010 4:00 pm | Comments Off

Everyone's saying that the next version of the iPhone will have a case upgrade, but Martin Schrotz couldn't wait -- he encased his iPhone 3GS in titanium, and Engadget has a gallery of pictures of the ubercool mod. I thought he had actually put the titanium cover over the plastic back, but apparently he went whole hog and actually removed the back cover and replaced it with this one. The design isn't quite perfect (though it looks great for a one-man mod, don't get me wrong) -- the logo is a tad too big, and the metal looks a little homemade to be Apple's actual brushed metal -- but it is much cleaner than the current plastic design.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the iPhone's next revision does take away a lot from the iPad. Hopefully not just in the hardware, either -- a cool metal back would be great, but I'd like to see the firmware overhauled as well.

Purported pics of next-gen iPhone front face surface

News, Pictures, Rumors, april, bezels, camera, case, iPhone, iphone3g, iresq, july, june, leaked, next-generation, proximity-sensor, repair, rumor | Monday February 8 2010 1:00 pm | Comments Off

iResQ, the iPhone/iPod repair site, has posted pics of what they claim is the front faceplate of the next-gen iPhone. Two things about this piece of hardware are particularly interesting. First, the part is approximately 1/4 of an inch taller than the iPhone 3GS, indicative of a slightly taller form factor for the next-gen iPhone. Second, there's a small, reflective strip directly above the hole for the phone speaker. iResQ believes this is likely to be the new location for the iPhone's proximity sensor rather than an indication of any new hardware; however, moving the proximity sensor to a new location and increasing the overall length of the device could still point to a front-facing camera or other new hardware on the next-gen iPhone.

It's worth mentioning the possibility that these "iPhone" parts aren't legitimate. iResQ hasn't revealed its source for the part, and purported iPhone bezels leaked in 2009 turned out to be parts for a completely different device. The backside of the supposed next-gen iPhone's face is missing quite a few parts present on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, which either means the part iResQ received was incomplete, the next-gen iPhone has had its internal hardware shifted around, or the part is fake.

So case manufacturers, don't throw out your old blueprints just yet. Unfortunately, it's likely we won't find out whether these are legit or not until June/July of this year; despite rumors of an iPhone update in April, the most likely date for the next-gen iPhone's release is early summer.

iPhone app helps Tasmanian cops nab crooks

GPS, News, Pictures, app, australia, cops, criminals, data, database, functions, iPhone, location, tasmania, tasmanian-cops, tracking | Tuesday December 22 2009 3:30 pm | Comments Off

Tasmanian cops are using some pretty sophisticated technology to catch criminals down there -- they have hardware in their cars now that will not only catch pictures of criminals, but upload them to a database, track down any outstanding warrants or other red flags, and update GPS information and location data of where the checks are made. Oh, and there's apparently an app for that. When the cops realized that they could do all of those same functions with department-issued iPhones, they built an app that replicates the functionality seen in the cop cars. So even while the police are walking a beat, they can pull out an iPhone and check up on any drivers they happen to see.

Very interesting. Unfortunately, there's not much information available about how long it took them to build the app, or just who put it all together -- the article from Australia's The Mercury seems mostly intended as a warning to criminals everywhere that even though a cop may not recognize you, an iPhone will. But this is just another reminder that we're all walking around with a little handheld device that has the ability to replace most of the technology we were using just a few years ago. When we hear about a cop making an arrest while on a phone call, we'll let you know.

Sketches 2 available now for creating even better art on your iPhone

News, Pictures, Tools, Updates, Version2, app, app store, appstore, art, canvas, iPhone, latenitesoft, release, sketches-2, version-2 | Tuesday December 22 2009 2:30 pm | Comments Off

Our friends at LateNiteSoft sent word that they've updated Sketches, one of the first iPhone apps I ever picked up, to version 2.0. The app has been released [iTunes link] as an entirely new download, so even upgraders from version 1 will have to pay the current price of $1.99. LateNiteSoft tells us that upgrade price is temporary -- they plan to keep the original app on the store as "Sketches Classic" for 99 cents, and eventually the price of the new version will go up a few more bucks. If you want to upgrade, go grab Sketches 2 as soon as you can.

Tthe new app offers a number of improvements, including a completely revamped UI designed to quickly run through large collections. The new UI also keeps tools handy, but out of the way, as you use them. As you can see in the screen shots above, all the tools are stashed at the bottom of the screen instead of covering up your picture while you're working on it. Sketches 2 now lets you paint using brushes, which makes for some nice choices in terms of marking pictures, canvas, maps, or whatever else you choose as a background in the app. The zoom functionality has been updated, with new gestures and a smoother shape adjustment interface. As with the original Sketches app, you can share and export your work however you like. You can use the app to create a masterpiece and then tweet about it, or just mark some notes on a map and send it off to a friend.

Sketches 1 was a bargain back when I picked it up for $7 in the earliest days of the App Store, and this new version adds even more features at less than half the price. If you have any inkling about making some art on your iPhone, it's a solid buy.

    Cydia    QTweet_logo

For those of you who have jailbroken your phones, you'll LOVE this!

For those of you who haven't jailbroken your phones, this just might be the encouraging shove.

Developed by Efiko software, qTweeter is the FASTEST way to both tweet AND update your Facebook status from your iPhone.  As well as posting any pictures or video to both Twitter and Facebook as well!

    QTweeter image

Unlike other applications, qTweeter is activated by a single swipe down from the top of the touch screen.  It can be activated at any time, while you're in any application, which is a bonus if you're surfing the web or have just taken a fabulous picture and want to share it with everyone you know.  The qTweeter screen is customizable as well - you can choose your background from a list of provided backgrounds.

Here's a video showing exactly how it works!

    Totally fleeping cool, huh?

    Want qTweeter on your iPhone?

First, you must have jailbroken your phone.  This application can only be found on Cydia's respository. If you haven't jailbroken your phone yet, check out this handy how-to post: 30 Second Universal Jailbreak Using Blackra1n Tutorial: Unlockers Beware! (NOTE for unlockers: Don't fret! Blacksn0w, the first unlocking utility for the 05.11.07 baseband will be out very soon!)

Launch the Cydia app and touch the "Cydia Store: Products" menu button. You can then scroll down to qTweeter and install the application.  There is a small developer's fee of $4.99, but for this kind of useability, it's totally worth it!

Pictures from the Beijing iPhone launch

beijing iphone chinaReader Maik Lutze sent us some pictures from in front of "THE PLACE" shopping center in the CBD area of Beijing. As you can see, Apple is planning for a rather large event tomorrow! He notes the activation stations, with copiers for IDs and, sadly, Windows machines for activation. There's also a stage, presumably for live acts, and some very nice seats. If you're there tomorrow, tag photos on Flickr as "tuaw" (no quotes) or submit them to our Tumblr page.

Thanks for sending these in, Maik! His blog, in German, can be found here.

AT&T’s iPhone MMS Displaying Incorrect Sender Number

News, Pictures, att, iPhone, mms | Thursday October 15 2009 9:52 am | Comments Off

    iphone-mms-screw-up-rm-eng-3

Ross Miller of Engadget is giving more credibility to some of the reports of iPhone MMS on AT&T’s network being a little wonky. It seems as if some users sending MMS messages are having their pictures delivered, but with the message on the recipients end displaying an incorrect phone number for the sender.

We’ve done some research on the issue and at the moment there is no viable explanation from AT&T, and no resolution (including the recently released AT&T 5.6 carrier file). Have any of our readers experienced this MMS behavior?

    Sound off in the comments!
