  • How To Get Higher Contrast Icons in iTunes 10

News, apple, color, contrast, iPhone, iPhone iTunes, iPod, iTunes, ios, ipad, itunes 10 | Friday September 10 2010 5:14 am | Comments Off

iTunes 10 is getting a major backwards haul from users who weren't thrilled with the new look. Some users may dislike, or simply have trouble seeing the new icons on the sidebar, because of their lower contrast (a monochrome grey/black on white).

There is a fix that inverts those colors, making them a white against a darker background. We aren't fond of the look, but perhaps it will help some users see the icons better.

    1) Quit iTunes.

    2) Go to the Terminal: Applications>Utilities>Terminal and type in (or paste) the following command line:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE

    3) Hit return to run the command.

    4) Relaunch iTunes, and you should now have high-contrast icons on your sidebar.

Adobe thinks Apple’s new cross-compiler policy is great, lack of support for (non-existant) Flash player not so much…

News, apple vs adobe, cross-compilers, cs5, flash, iPhone, ipad, ipod touch, packager | Thursday September 9 2010 8:34 pm | Comments Off

Like Google, Adobe is also over-joyed at Apple’s newly changed and clarified developer license agreement, specifically the part that now allows cross-compilers like Flash CS5 Packager for iPhone:

Apple’s announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe’s Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool. This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases.

It’s not all rosy in Adobe land, however, as they point out Apple still won’t let the still not really functional Flash player for mobile onto iOS:

Adobe will continue to work to bring full web browsing with Flash Player 10.1 as well as standalone applications on AIR to a broad range of devices, working with key industry partners including Google, HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Palm/HP, RIM, Samsung and others.

I’ve used Flash Player mobile 10.1 on my Nexus One. It works worse than Flash for Mac which has been around for years and is still horrible (even with hardware acceleration). Flash for BlackBerry and Flash for Palm still haven’t shipped and are so late they could verge on vaporware at this point. Despite Adobe talking about Flash for iOS (then iPhone OS) since 2008, it simply doesn’t exit.

So yes, yay, Flash games and apps can now be ported to iOS. Whoosh, another 2000+. But let’s get Flash player working really well on just one mobile platform before we whine about it on iOS again, shall we?

Google likes Apple’s clarified iOS advertising policy

Google, News, admob, apple vs google, iPhone, ipad, ipod touch, license agreement, mobile advertising | Thursday September 9 2010 8:59 am | Comments Off

Google Vice President of Product Management, Omar Hamoui, has just posted about the changes made this morning to Apple’s iOS developer licensing agreement, specifically the section referring to in-app advertising:

Today, Apple updated their iPhone Developer Program License Agreement. Unlike the previous version, these new terms ensure that Apple’s developers have the choice of a variety of advertising solutions (including Google’s and AdMob’s) to earn money and fund their apps. Apple’s new terms will keep in-app advertising on the iPhone open to many different mobile ad competitors and enable advertising solutions that operate across a wide range of platforms.

Read the whole things for why this is great news for everyone, from consumers to developers to puppy dogs (that’s not me being facetious — it really is).

The Electronic Classroom: iPads As Algebra Textbooks Gets Test Run In CA

News, algebra, iPhone, ipad, teaching aids | Thursday September 9 2010 8:18 am | Comments Off
    YouTubeiPad

Do students with electronic teaching aids learn better than those with traditional methods?

That's the question that education firm Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is trying to answer.  In conjunction with California Secretary of Education Bonnie Reiss, they're launching a test program in four school districts that will swap out the algebra textbooks of 400 eighth-graders and replace them with customized iPads, loaded with electronic versions of the textbooks as well as online homework coaches, animated instructions on completing assignments, and hundreds of videos from teaching experts.  The students who get the iPads will have their progress tracked and compared to their classmates.

Some critics are already accusing the program of being little more than a sales platform for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, while others question whether the iPad-equipped students will in fact spend more time chatting, web surfing, etc. than actually studying.

Apple review guidelines: yes to kids, no to farts

App Store Apps, Apps, Games, News, app store, app store review guidelines, development, iPhone, ipad, ipod touch | Thursday September 9 2010 7:38 am | Comments Off

While Apple’s newly published App Store review guidelines are locked up nice and tight behind the iOS developer login, Engadget is hosting a copy in the clear. They’ve also broken out some highlights:

    • “We have lots of kids downloading lots of apps, and parental controls don’t work unless the parents set them up (many don’t). So know that we’re keeping an eye out for the kids.”
    • “We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps.”
    • “We have lots of serious developers who don’t want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour.”
    • “If your app is rejected, we have a Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps.”
    • “This is a living document, and new apps presenting new questions may result in new rules at any time. Perhaps your app will trigger this.”
    • “If it sounds like we’re control freaks, well, maybe it’s because we’re so committed to our users and making sure they have a quality experience with our products.”

Steve Jobs has rallied against porn before, but it would be nice if the App Store could provide the same, appropriately rated content as, say, iTunes movies. As to fart apps, we won’t make any jokes or point out any irony there.

However, I’m curious if “amateur hour” is Apple’s new passive-aggressive (aggressive-aggressive?) battle cry against Google/YouTube/App Inventor and Android?

Go read Engadget for more, and grab the download if it interests you.

Is The iPad Cannibalizing PC Sales?

News, PC, Windows, apple, iPhone, ios, ipad, mac, netbooks, notebooks | Wednesday September 8 2010 9:05 am | Comments Off

    Ipad

A report from All Things Digital says that the iPad is cannibalizing PC sales, and that it's not just happening in the netbook market; it may be the entire PC industry.

In a note to clients, UBS analyst Maynard Um said, “Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad, causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad-like tablets. We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment. We are not sold that the iPad is purely cannibalizing PC sales, as the functionality of the iPad can not yet fully match the functionality of notebook PC’s. However, consumers who purchase iPads may be more willing to delay purchases and upgrades of existing PC’s.”

Um notes that because few iPad rivals are available right now, that this trend could continue far into 2011. Um says that the iPad will probably maintain a strtong momentum and that iPad sales will probably hit 28 million in 2011, which he says may still be a "conservative" estimate.
