Google Voice returning to App Store soon?

App Store Apps, Apps, News, app store, google voice, gv mobile, iPhone | Friday September 10 2010 7:23 am | Comments Off

GV Mobile developer, Sean Kovacs, had some good news to share on Twitter saying that his unofficial Google Voice application GV Mobile should now be allowed into the App Store. Since GV Mobile does not violate any of the new rules regarding the app review guidelines that Apple has laid out for developers, Kovacs figured why not resubmit his application and try to finally get it back where it belongs.

GV Mobile made it’s first appearance into the App Store back in July of 2009 and was later yanked by Apple due to allegedly duplicating the iPhone’s calling and text messaging features. Later it was rumored that Apple laid blame on AT&T was for the removal of the application.

    TUAW review: EpicWin for iPhone

Apps, Games, News, app store, appstore, epicwin, iPhone, productivity | Thursday September 9 2010 3:00 pm | Comments Off
As a gamer and productivity fetishist, I've been anticipating EpicWin for iPhone since we first saw the app's trailer. It aims to enhance the drudgery of a to-do list with elements of a fantasy role-playing game like World of Warcraft, thereby adding a bit of fun to your daily tasks. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and, while it's fun in a I'm-gaming-while-I-should-be-working way, EpicWin feels unfinished. The developers have promised (and delivered) new features via updates, but EpicWin still feels like an internal beta. Here's what I found.

    Choose your character

Like many fantasy role-playing games, the first thing you've got to do when launching EpicWin is create your character. There are five to choose from, all familiar to the genre: a dwarf, a warrior priestess, an "undead" skeleton warrior, a male warrior and, oddly enough, a living tree. Think of a happy-go-lucky Ent and you'll get the idea. The first three are free; the others can be purchased in-game.

Apple review guidelines: yes to kids, no to farts

App Store Apps, Apps, Games, News, app store, app store review guidelines, development, iPhone, ipad, ipod touch | Thursday September 9 2010 7:38 am | Comments Off

While Apple’s newly published App Store review guidelines are locked up nice and tight behind the iOS developer login, Engadget is hosting a copy in the clear. They’ve also broken out some highlights:

    • “We have lots of kids downloading lots of apps, and parental controls don’t work unless the parents set them up (many don’t). So know that we’re keeping an eye out for the kids.”
    • “We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps.”
    • “We have lots of serious developers who don’t want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour.”
    • “If your app is rejected, we have a Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps.”
    • “This is a living document, and new apps presenting new questions may result in new rules at any time. Perhaps your app will trigger this.”
    • “If it sounds like we’re control freaks, well, maybe it’s because we’re so committed to our users and making sure they have a quality experience with our products.”

Steve Jobs has rallied against porn before, but it would be nice if the App Store could provide the same, appropriately rated content as, say, iTunes movies. As to fart apps, we won’t make any jokes or point out any irony there.

However, I’m curious if “amateur hour” is Apple’s new passive-aggressive (aggressive-aggressive?) battle cry against Google/YouTube/App Inventor and Android?

Go read Engadget for more, and grab the download if it interests you.

Apple Adjusts Review Guidelines, Loosens Restrictions (iPhone Flash Development is OK)

Apple today announced that they are relaxing "all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps as long as the resultings apps do not download any code." Giving developers "the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need."

It particularly mentions sections 3.3.1,3.3.2 and 3.3.9. This means, well taken at face-value, that Adobe's compiler is now okay for developers to use. This was a restriction that was placed early this year when we all felt a bit of tension between Apple and Adobe.

We have a little bit of background here.

Hit the jump for the press release

Statement by Apple on App Store Review Guidelines

The App Store℠ has revolutionized the way mobile applications are developed and distributed. With over 250,000 apps and 6.5 billion downloads, the App Store has become the world's largest mobile application platform and App Store developers have earned over one billion dollars from the sales of their apps.

We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year.

In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.

In addition, for the first time we are publishing the App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps. We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store.

The App Store is perhaps the most important milestone in the history of mobile software. Working together with our developers, we will continue to surprise and delight our users with innovative mobile apps.

iOS apps downloads increasing faster than iTunes music

App Store Apps, Apps, News, app store, downloads, growth, iPhone, iTunes, ipad, ipod touch, itunes store, music | Wednesday September 8 2010 8:31 am | Comments Off

iOS apps growing faster than iTunes music

Both iTunes Store music and iOS App Store apps are being downloaded at an increasing rate. Apps are just increasing faster.

As can be seen, the App store has reached the same total downloads in 2.2 years as the iTMS reached after five years. The two curves are likely to be the same height (around 13 billion each) before the year is over.

I’m downloading far more apps than music, what about you?

App Downloads Quickly Gaining Ground on Music in iTunes

Apps, Digital Distribution, News, app store, apple, iPhone, iPod, iTunes, ios, ipad, ipad apps, iphone apps, ipod touch, music | Wednesday September 8 2010 7:42 am | Comments Off

    Music vs apps

At one point it seemed that an App Store was a crazy venture. Webapps seemed like the best route, but it sounds like it's been paying off.

The chart above shows data gathered by Asymco that shows Apps are quickly gaining on music, and may do so in about half the time.

A personal note, we do remember a time when people were reluctant to jump on the digital distribution movement with music. It sounds silly looking back, and we are sure there are still some who would rather have the physical copy. But now buying a song for a dollar is seen as common. We aren't sure how big of a barrier Apps had to overcome to become mainstream.
