  • New iPhone ad: Family Travel

If you've been watching TV over the last few days (and who hasn't, with that USA / Canada hockey game and the tsunami coverage), you may have seen the latest in the series of iPhone ads.

The ad, titled "Family Travel," features a voice-over by a Mom who gushes that "It's unbelievable how much better family trips have gotten..." as she demonstrates using the Southwest Airlines app to check in on a flight from Denver to LA, finds a restaurant for the family (Heidi's Brooklyn Deli) in the C concourse at Denver International Airport with Gate Guru, makes sure that she has entertainment for her kids in the form of "Finding Nemo" loaded in the iPod app, and then turns off the living room lights at home with the Schlage Link app.

For those of you who are sticklers for advertising accuracy, note that Southwest flight 1403 is not an actual SWA flight between DEN and LAX and that the restaurant list for Concourse C at Denver International Airport is actually a mashup of restaurants located throughout Denver International Airport. All of the apps are free, although Schlage Link does require a monthly subscription and appropriate Z-Link hardware on the home front (similar to the Christmas tree ad from the holidays).

iPhone users come in all ages but probably live near a big city

Android, News, Polls, admob, apple, audience, flyover, iPhone, ipad, midwest, myxer-boombox, states, survey, urban | Saturday February 27 2010 4:00 pm | Comments Off

The end of this week has brought a little flurry of information about the differences between iPhone and Android users. First up, Admob has released the results of a survey that says the iPhone is twice as popular as comparable smartphones in both young and old demographics. Unfortunately, we can only guess as to why (it would be a little more interesting if either age showed a preference for one phone over another), but it seems the iPhone has yet another remarkable trait: appealing to users of all ages. No wonder Apple is jumping in on the iPad -- they really do have a pre-release audience.

But they can't sit on their laurels for too long -- according to a report at Myxer's Boombox (via Fortune), the Android OS is picking up the pace, especially in what city folk call the "flyover states." Android use of the program has actually surpassed iPhone users in Montana, the Dakotas, and Arizona and New Mexico, and the numbers are close in the Midwest, including Kansas and Missouri. That's interesting -- that could have something to do with the distribution of Apple retail stores, or maybe just more urban center dwellers are drawn to the iPhone. DC seems to be the exception, as Virginia and Maryland are much more Android, but otherwise, if you're in a state with a big population center, odds are that you own an iPhone. Fascinating.

Verizon May Be One Step Closer To Their Own Nexus One

The Federal Communication Commission recently posted a whole lotta documents regarding the evaluation of a new phone from HTC.  Its model number (PB99300) is verrrrry similar to the Nexus One's (PB99100).  It's a CDMA phone (which is Verizon's carrier tech of choice).  And if you sift through the technobabble, it's clear that the phone passed its FCC tests with flying colors.

So there's a very good chance this is the Nexus One that's scheduled to be Verizon bound -- we just don't know when, exactly.

Pubic Image Ltd: The Real Reason Apple Purged The Naughty Apps

So the truth is finally out as to why Apple purged the App Store of all those "naughty" apps.  It wasn't because of complaints from women and/or the easily offended -- it was because Apple itself was embarrassed about them.

At least that's the argument posited by John Gruber on his Daring Fireball blog.  Pointing out that high-end (and "respectable") app makers like Playboy, Victoria's Secret, and Sports Illustrated survived the "St. Valentine's Massacre," Gruber theorizes that the cheesier, sleazier entries were targeted BECAUSE of their cheese/sleaze factor:

Apple sees the App Store as an extension of the Apple brand. That’s why flat-out pornography has never been and never will be allowed. You can walk into a Barnes and Noble and buy a copy of Maxim, but you won’t find a copy of Hustler. Not because Hustler wouldn’t sell, but because selling pornography goes against the Barnes and Noble brand.

I think what Apple was getting squeamish about wasn’t the sexy apps themselves, but the cheesiness that the sexy apps (and their prominence in best selling lists) was bestowing upon the general feel and vibe of the App Store. One thing I wasn’t aware of before the recent crackdown was the degree to which these apps were seeping into various non-entertainment categories. E.g., like half the “new” apps in the “productivity” category featured imagery of large-breasted bikini-clad women.

In other words, public perception was the issue.  If the first thing users see when entering the App Store is a slew of slapdash, lowbrow "naughty apps," a lot of people aren't going to want to come back.

In the meantime, Apple has quietly backslid on its original moral stance and, for example, allowed Wobble to sit at the grownup's table again.

Welcome to the United States of Hypocrisy.

Steve Jobs: Birthdays, Awards, Contest Calls, Shareholder Meetings, and iPhone 3.1.2

10 billion, News, awards, iPhone, iphone 3.1.2, shareholder meeting | Saturday February 27 2010 2:03 pm | Comments Off

    superjobs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs turned 55 this week according to TUAW, so we’ll start off by wishing him a healthy, happy, peaceful, and prosperous birthday! What do you get the man who gave us the Apple II, Mac, Pixar, iPod, iTunes, Apple Retail, iPhone, and iPad? Well, a couple of awards aren’t a bad place to start…

    MWC and Jim Henson Awards

While neither Apple, nor the iPhone were at Mobile World Congress, Macworld reports Steve Jobs still won their award for “Mobile Personality of the Year”. (Stephen Fry accepted on his behalf).

Macworld also tells us Jobs received a Jim Henson Company Award/Celebration Honor for reflecting “the core values and philosophy of the legendary Jim Henson and the company he founded.”

    Calling all iTunes $10K Winners

While not winning awards, Steve Jobs has been personally calling the winner of his own contests — in this case the man who won the 10 billionth iTunes song download. Rolling Stone got the details:

Sulcer first thought was that he was being pranked. “He called me and said, ‘This is Steve Jobs from Apple.’ I said, ‘Yeah right, I have a son that loves to play tricks and he does that every now and then — calls me and imitates somebody.” After three or four times of asking “Come on now, who is this,” Sulcer realized that his caller ID read simply “Apple,” and only then did he believe that he was the winner of the contest and a $10,000 iTunes card.

    Apple Annual Shareholder Meeting

Jobs also ran Apple’s annual general meeting, fielding questions in classic style according to Business Week. On why Apple needs a $40 billion war chest:

“We know if we need to acquire something — a piece of the puzzle to make something big and bold — we can write a check for it and not borrow a lot of money and put our whole company at risk. The cash in the bank gives us tremendous security and flexibility.”

In defense of Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt, now resigned from the Apple board:

“Eric conducted himself as a board member appropriately and recused himself whenever discussing matters that might involve conflict.”

Macworld caps it off with a response on what keeps him up at night:

“Shareholder meetings,” Jobs quickly quipped, before giving the meeting a cold splash of reality.

“Apple requires stability in the world. People aren’t going to worry about which laptop to buy if they can’t afford dinner, can’t afford to send their kids to school, can’t afford textbooks. There are things much bigger than us that are out of our control. So we try to just do the best we can.”

    iPhone 3.1.2

Amazingly, Steve Jobs managed to do all this, according to 9to5mac, while still rocking iPhone 3.1.2. That’s the older version of the iPhone OS updated a couple of weeks ago to 3.1.3. (We too were hoping he at least would be on iPhone 4.0 by now!) This was determined by looking at the email headers in a response he sent to an Apple customer concerned about developers let go on the Final Cut Pro Team:

No worries. FCP is alive and well.

Phoenix Wright, Hexen II coming to the iPhone

FPS, News, PC, PhoenixWright, app store, ds, engine, hexen-2, iPhone, phoenix wright, ports, quake, rpg, shooter, slide-to-play, touch-arcade, vimov | Saturday February 27 2010 2:00 pm | Comments Off

Good news for fans of good games: the terrific DS courtroom simulator (which, trust me, sounds much less fun than it actually is) Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney is coming to the iPhone, and Slide to Play has posted some hands-on video. The game takes the two DS screens and stacks them on top of each other rather than converting the game into a landscape version, so it's basically a straight port of the DS game. It'd be interesting to see a more iPhone-specific version of the game (maybe something that uses the camera or the accelerometer to show off evidence in the courtroom), but we'll take just the port, too -- if you haven't played any of the Phoenix Wright games but enjoy a good adventure yarn, you're in for a treat. The game should be out "soon."

Hexen II is on its way to the iPhone as well, and Touch Arcade has a few screens and video of that one. I was much more of a Quake fan, but Hexen, with its medieval setting and RPG elements placed in the same game engine, had its share of followers back in the day, too. Unfortunately, Vimov doesn't yet have the rights to Hexen II -- they're just working with an open-sourced version of the engine. To actually release the data on the App Store, they'll need to make a deal with Activision, so we'll have to wait and see if that can happen before you can start hacking and slashing through the world of the Serpent Riders again.

Ten Billionth iTunes Song Downloader Gets Surprise Phone Call

Louie Sulcer wasn't expecting to make history this past week.  He just wanted to download Johnny Cash’s “Guess Things Happen That Way” and add it to a mix for his son.

Ironically, the way things happened, the Woodstock, Georgia native was the man who downloaded song number TEN BEEELLION from iTunes.

Sulcer's reward?  A US$10,000 iTunes card -- and a personal phone call from Steve Jobs.  At first, Sulcer thought it was a prank call, until he realized his caller ID said "Apple."

Even more ironically, Sulcer had recently gotten an iPod Nano as a birthday present.  With ten grand worth of iTunes credit -- and a personal collection of nearly 900 songs -- it's a good bet he'll be pricing out a 320GB iPod Classic real soon now...
