Google revamps mobile Google News format

Like most "mobile versions" of websites, Google News was simplified for use on devices featuring what Steve Jobs once called "the baby Internet." Sadly, this simplified version also showed up by default on the iPhone, leading to an experience that was, to put it charitably, subpar.

That's all changed now that Google has redesigned the mobile version of Google News for iPhone, Android, and Palm Pre users. The new mobile version is far more feature-rich than the old one and is more consistent in its appearance (i.e., it's almost indistinguishable from the desktop version) compared to the old "mobile-optimized" Google News.

It also includes a handy "Jump to" link which brings up a window that allows you to skip to the news section of your choice, saving your thumbs from severe scroll fatigue.

There's no need to download anything. Simply go to Google News on your iPhone and check out the changes.

First Look: Super Monkey Ball 2

    News, iPhone | Thursday November 19 2009 7:00 pm | Comments Off
Super Monkey Ball 2 not only intends to improve upon the original, but to live up to the considerable potential of the popular monkey-rolling franchise. I sat down with Sega’s associate creative director Ethan Einhorn to discuss this new game for the iPhone. Slated for a Holiday 2009 launch date, the price for this game still has not been revealed.

Twittelator Pro Announces Official Geotagging Support, Tweetie On The Way

App News, News, Stone Design, Twittelator, atebits, iPhone, tweetie | Thursday November 19 2009 6:36 pm | Comments Off

Today Twitter announced that it has enabled geotagging support for third-party Twitter clients, just two weeks after they began rolling out the new retweet feature. Following the announcement from Twitter, Stone Design announced that Twittelator Pro [App Store, $4.99] is the first Twitter client for iPhone to fully support both features. We've also heard from a little birdy that beta versions of Tweetie 2 [App Store, $2.99] already support both features. We're not sure when that update will drop, but we're guessing that it'll be soon.

7 Most Bizarre and Outrageous iPhone Apps

Just when I thought I had seen everything in the tech sphere, the Universe goes and surprises me again. Usually iPhone applications can be categorized as the good, the bad and the completely useless and range from the sublime to the surreal.

Today we are going to cover some of the most bizarre apps out there, that will make you tread the iTunes Store carefully, the next time you decide to do some app shopping.

    Sket

You though your days of playing doctor are long gone? Well think again. The iStethoscope Pro  app turns the iPhone into a stethoscope by allowing you to listen to that heartbeat of yours. It works as diagnostic tool by making use of the earphones and a microphone. Of course this is only for recreational use since listening to heartbeats is so much fun! Price - $0.99

    Ilickit

The iLickit iPhone App makes me question the progress of humanity. This app wants you to achieve size zero as it encourages you to lick the screen whenever it flashes a sumptuous meal. Not my idea of dieting. Price - $1.99.

    Blower

Its not only you that blows hot or blows cold! Now with the Blower app, you can actually make your iPhone blow air through the speakers. Now why would someone voluntary subject his or her iPhone speakers to such gimmicky fun is a whole other question. Price $0.99.

    Crybaby

The Stethoscope Pro app may still have some merit however I can’t believe that someone actually came up with the Cry Translator iPhone app. The app claims to interpret a baby’s cry and lets you know if the baby is stressed, hungry, sleepy, bored and annoyed. Welcome to 21st century parenting folks. Price - $9.99

    Hm

The Heart Monitor is another way to check that beating heart of yours and see if you are dead or alive. To test this baby out, you need earphones with a built in microphone. This one isn’t that bad as it can be a nifty tool when you are exercising. Price - $2.99

    Puff

The Puff app helps you channel the inner pervert in you. If you dream of lifting skirts of hot Asian girls but are afraid of being smacked (rightfully so), then live vicariously through the Puff app. The idea is to lift the girl’s skirt and see her indignation. Price $0.99.

    Picture 12

Do you suffer from an inferiority complex? Then you should probably stay away from the Fit or Fugly app. The app judges how sexy or ugly your mug is by analyzing your picture. It also uses Fibonacci’s golden ratio to scientifically call you ugly! Let us know if you make the cut. Price $0.99.

    Kitchen scale

The Rihanna Kitchen Scale isn’t an application but we still want to feature it. The scale comes equipped with an iPod Dock so you can weigh all sorts of vegetables while blasting Pink Floyd (or whatever you fancy). Nice idea but somehow it makes the iPhone a lot less cooler.

These are just some the crazy iPhone apps out there. Do let us know if you tried any of the app on this list or have more crazy apps for us.

For the California Energy Commission, the voluntary guidelines of the Federal Energy Star program aren't enough to curb energy guzzling by HDTVs.

    TomTom delivers promised iPhone update

GPS, News, TomTom, app, iPhone, navigation, text to speech | Thursday November 19 2009 3:30 pm | Comments Off

TUAW told you it was coming, and it has arrived. TomTom has updated its U.S. GPS navigation app [US$99.99, iTunes link] and added text-to-speech, advanced lane guidance, and a 'help me' feature for use in emergencies.

TomTom has been a little late to the text-to-speech party, with most competitors already offering this important function. Magellan has now jumped into the game with a very nice nav app as well, and at an introductory price that undercuts the TomTom app by twenty bucks.

All of the major navigation apps for the iPhone are quickly approaching feature parity. At this point, your main decision is whether you want the data streamed to your phone (as the AT&T app does), or have maps and data built into the app (like TomTom, Navigon, Magellan and some others).

Looming over whatever decision you make is trying to figure out if Apple will ever allow the Google turn-by-turn navigation app into the app store. It's going to be free, and Google says it wants the app to be on the iPhone. Of course things haven't been going swimmingly between Google and Apple of late (Google Voice, Android competition), so it's just a guess as to how that will all turn out.

If you need a navigation app in order to get to Grandma's house for the holidays, it's probably a good time to buy one. However, If you're willing to wait for the possibility of Google's free turn-by-turn nav app making it to the iPhone, you might be rewarded for your patience.

Opera Mobile 10 Beta for Windows Mobile vs. iPhone 3G Safari — Browser Battle

    thumb_450_Opera Mobile 10.JPG

Our good friend Phil over at sibling site WMExperts got his geeky hands on Opera Mobile 10 beta for Windows Mobile and did what any self-respecting editor would do — took it one on one with the great one — Safari. Well, technically Safari running on last year’s slower hardware, the iPhone 3G (as opposed to the much faster iPhone 3GS), but it’s not a final build of Opera either. The results?

Opera Mobile 10 beta isn’t quite as good as Safari on iPhone 3G, but it’s getting there. Hit the link above to see Phil’s video, then come on back here and let us know what you think.

Another Reason to Jailbreak: CyDialer from Saurik (Creator of Cydia)

    Let's Talk Cydialer!

You know, of all the applications that we cover here on iSmashPhone.com, we don't talk about applications that actually make it easier to make a phone call.

After all, that's what the iPhone is, right?  A PHONE.

Um, yeah, let me save my Doom game and hide my Sims 3 game, and let's talk phone calls.

CyDialer is a new app for jailbroken phones available from Cydia (search: CyDialer) that allows you to make phone calls to the people who you call the most from the lockscreen.

Besides the fact that you can flip through your contacts' photos with a slip of the thumb, you do not have to unlock your phone in order to call.

    Cydialer Cydialer2

    Here's how it works:

    1. You choose your contact to call and the person's picture enlarges.
    2. Swipe your thumb across the bottom to call.
    3. You should be talking to them in no time (or their voicemail, whatever).

This is a pretty cool little program for only $1.74.

It does require the installation of another program called Cydget (also written by Saurik) that is similar to Winterboard, only for your lockscreen.

While CyDialer is the first plugin for Cydget, we're sure many, many more will come.
