  • TV Show Lie to Me Lies to Us About Swipe-able iPhone SMS Notifications

Lie to Me s02e03 Notification Swiping

The TV show Lie to Me, a few weeks back (season 2, episode 3 to be exact) decided to take the lies just one step too far — they showed an iPhone where one of the characters could swipe between SMS notifications.

To the trained eye, of course, it was merely screenshots of standard model text dialogs over the Notes app, with swiping no doubt courtesy of the Photo App, and sound effects added in post. (The whole screen, not just the alert dialog, changed on swipe). However, it shows that even TV now has to work around the vexing lack of great notification handling on the iPhone.

Sci-fi aside, it does show one possible approach. If instead of that nasty little box you had to cancel or reply to immediately, or risk losing forever, Apple let you swipe back to see previous notifications, would that be a good solution? Or are we still holding our breath (and turning ever-bluer) waiting or a Palm webOS- or Google Android-level solution?

Judge Rejects AT&T’s Request to Stop Verizon “Map for That” Commercials

News, att, iPhone, lawsuit, map for that, verizon | Wednesday November 18 2009 9:03 pm | Comments Off

Speaking of the ongoing ad-war between AT&T and Verizon, according to CNET:

A federal judge in Atlanta Wednesday declined to grant AT&T a temporary restraining order that would force Verizon to stop showing the ads.

So the “map for that” campaign can continue, even as AT&T counters on the marketing front with “side by side“.

On the legal front, though certainly a set back, we’re sure AT&T’s lawyers want to get as much as they can out of this legal challenges will continue as well.

Judge Rejects AT&T’s Request to Stop Verizon “Map for That” Commercials

Judge Denies AT&T’s Request To Stop Verizon’s 3G Map Ads

News, iPhone, verizon | Wednesday November 18 2009 8:01 pm | Comments Off

A federal judge has denied AT&T's request to temporarily block Verizon Wireless from airing advertisements comparing coverage maps for Verizon's and AT&T's 3G data networks. AT&T argued that the ads were "misleading," as some would misinterpret AT&T's comparatively sparse 3G coverage map as a map of their actual network, making it appear that there was no service available in those areas not covered on the map.

App & Accessory Turn Your iPhone Into A Stethoscope

App News, New Apps, News, health, iPhone | Wednesday November 18 2009 6:01 pm | Comments Off

A new application turns a regular iPhone into an electronic stethoscope with the assistance of the $30 iStetho adapter that connects a modified (read: cut up with a pair of scissors) stethoscope to the iPhone's microphone. Once it's connected, the iStethoscope Pro app [App Store, $0.99] "amplifies the signal and eliminates audio outside of what is important for diagnosis." Naturally, it wouldn't probably work as a normal stethoscope, and certainly won't replace them.

AT&T loses first round in battle over Verizon ads

News, att, iPhone, network, verizon | Wednesday November 18 2009 6:00 pm | Comments Off

The Associated Press is reporting that an Atlanta Federal judge has denied an AT&T request to pull the Verizon 'there's a map for that' ads.

The judge has set a December 16th hearing to give AT&T another chance to make a case.

AT&T filed suit earlier this month looking for a temporary restraining order to stop the ads, and wanted a permanent injunction to halt them. The ads say that the AT&T network is not up to the quality or range of the Verizon network, and shows two coverage maps to make the point. AT&T claims the maps are misleading, and injures the company reputation.

Verizon has said the commercials are truthful and accurate.

The case pits the two communication giants against each other as they fight for increasing shares of the mobile market. AT&T has an exclusive on the iPhone, and that has brought AT&T an increasingly growing share of mobile customers.

Verizon was reportedly offered an exclusive on the iPhone more than 2 years ago but turned it down. There have been sporadic reports that Verizon would like to get the iPhone back when the AT&T contract expires, but with some Verizon ads targeting the iPhone as well as AT&T that looks to be increasingly unlikely.
