By the time you read this, Tap Tap Revenge 3 should have made its way to the App Store. The latest version of the rhythm game/music platform for the iPhone and iPod touch is a huge release for Tapulous -- from the series' humble beginnings as a pre-App Store bit of code to the more recent incarnations of artist-specific music collections, Tapulous has taken Tap Tap a long way in the still short history of this gaming platform. And now they're trying to go even farther: they've introduced in-app purchases to the game (you can find a full list of songs available now as in-app purchases inside the interview below), and they've added in social features, from customizable avatars to in-game chat and score sharing.

Tapulous COO Andrew Lacy sat down to talk with us just before the release of the software, both about how he thinks consumers will react to the new business model, and what's next for Tapulous and this series that has come so far already. Tap Tap Revenge 3 should be in the App Store very soon -- it's available for 99 cents, with extra music packs at six songs for $2.99, or two songs for 99 cents.

    Themes(Tiesto)

One of the most popular games in iPhone (and iPod touch) history is about to raise the bar again as Tapulous has just announced Tap Tap Revenge 3. What’s new the third time around?

First, they’ll have 40 song bundles from major artists available to purchase in-app at launch, along with custom themes for each. Next, they’ll have an online mode with bombs, weapons, chat, PMs, and more. Customizable avatars are on tap, with achievements and levels, as well as an overall look refresh and performance enhancements.

There will be over 100 free tracks for download as well, along with new free and paid tracks released weekly.

Pricing is $0.99 for the app (Apple doesn’t allow in-app purchase for free apps), with $2.99 6-track bundle and $0.99 2-track bundle options. Availability, of course, depends on when exactly Apple sees fit to release it into the App Store.

Bell and Telus to Launch the iPhone in Canada Next Month?

3G network, News, bell, canada, competition, hspa, iPhone, iphone-risk, pricing, rogers, telus | Monday October 5 2009 5:47 pm | Comments Off

    telus_iphone_3gs

TiPb, among others, has been hearing rumors for months now that Bell and Telus’ new GSM-based HSPA+ network would be up and running by November, and that the iPhone would follow along immediately there after. Nice to see some confirmation via Canadian stalwart, the Globe and Mail, however:

Bell announced Monday that it will launch national service in November on the $1-billion next-generation wireless network it has been building with Telus, months ahead of schedule. The project extends the two companies’ existing third-generation (3G) networks to include the same technology standard employed by Rogers, the nation’s largest cellphone company.

No comments from any of the carriers or Apple, of course, and it remains to be seen what if any downward pressure competition in Canada — like in the UK — would put on iPhone pricing for consumers.

Our question: Bell and Telus will have HSPA+ but no EDGE (to our knowledge), so if an iPhone on Bell or Telus couldn’t get a 3G signal, what exactly would it fall back on? EVDO/CDMA is not an option…

Vonage releases VOIP app for iPhone

News, VOIP, Vonage, app store, iPhone, international calls | Monday October 5 2009 5:30 pm | Comments Off

Vonage [iTunes link] today posted an app enabling cheap international calls using either Wi-Fi or the cellular network. Vonage Mobile for iPhone is free, but requires you set up an account with Vonage, even if you already have an account for your home or work phones.

Users can use their existing mobile numbers, contacts and device interface to place the calls. Just use your existing contact list and click and dial - no extra steps. Users also receive real-time balance updates to ensure they always make the calls they want. The app utilizes your existing cell phone number so people recognize who is calling.

    The app supports:
    • Lower international rates than traditional carriers
    • Lets you use your existing contact list without taking extra steps
    • Uses your existing cell phone number
It's a bit surprising Apple and AT&T let this app through. It seems like it certainly 'duplicates existing iPhone features', but it may also be that Apple and AT&T are being careful while under the watchful eye of the FCC.

There have been a lot of negative comments on this app from people who are already Vonage customers and were looking for integration of this app into their existing accounts, but there is no cross-over between the two.
