Things We Like: Lollapalooza App Helps You Track Bands To See, Read Bios, and More!

Lollapalooza, News, Things We Like, iPhone, music festivals | Sunday July 26 2009 8:53 pm | Comments Off

Anyone who's ever attended a major music festival knows how tough it is to keep track of all the bands you want to see. Thankfully for iPhone users, the Lollapalooza guys have come out with their own free app to help you get the most out of this year's lineup. The Lollapalooza app [App Store] lets you see each day's lineup, create a schedule of bands to see, and even look at a map to see where everything is. If you've already signed up on the site, you can sign in on the app and continue tweaking your schedule on the fly. Best of all, the lineup is stored in the app in case service dies during the festival.

I'll likely be headed to Lollapalooza, so let me know in the comments if you plan on going!

Things We Like: Get A Free 30-Day Trial For AT&T Navigator

News, Things We Like, att, iPhone, navigation, turn-by-turn GPS | Sunday July 26 2009 6:24 pm | Comments Off

If you haven't been sleeping in iPhone class lately, you'll probably remember the turn-by-turn navigation app that AT&T released last month. The app is free, but to make it work you're required to pay another $10 a month on top of your current AT&T bill. Most of you were less than impressed with the idea of giving AT&T more money and didn't bother trying it. If you're still itching to try it out, we've got an awesome trick for you!

Simply call AT&T (611 on your AT&T iPhone), press 0 to speak with an operator, and tell them that you want a free trial to AT&T Navigator. They'll set you up with a free 30 day trial which will auto-renew. To avoid being charged actual real monies, simply call back to cancel before the last day. And that, ladies and gentleman, is awesome!

iPhone 3GS: Enable Detailed Battery Life Indicator

News, Tips and Tricks, battery, iPhone | Sunday July 26 2009 5:46 pm | Comments Off

Here's a nifty, new feature for those folks who are always concerned about their battery life. New for the iPhone 3GS, you can now display a percentage meter right next to the traditional battery life indicator. To enable it, head to Settings>General>Usage and flip the "Battery Percentage" switch on. Now you'll see the percentage of available battery right next to the battery icon!

Personally I don't leave this on because it makes me think the battery is draining faster than it used to. But hey, give it a try! If you don't like it, just turn it back off. Enjoy!

Update: Promo codes again allowed for 17+ apps

News, PromoCodes, app store, appstore, iPhone, promo codes, ratings | Sunday July 26 2009 4:15 pm | Comments Off

Recently, we reported that developers were not able to request promo codes for their iPhone apps if the app had received a 17+ rating due to having an embedded web browser, unfiltered 3rd party content, or contained excessive violence or sexual content. This restriction severely limited the ability of the developers to distribute promotional copies of their software to generate publicity and awareness of the app.

Several other outlets picked up on the story, and developers sounded off as well. Luckily, it seems that Apple has been listening: over the past few days, we have received word from a number of developers stating that they are now able to request promo codes for their 17+ apps. While Apple has not made any official comment on the issue, it appears that they have quietly conceded this battle to the developers, once again enabling them to distribute promo codes as needed for all of their apps.

Considering the many other issues developers have faced with the App Store, it's obvious that the process is far from perfect. And given the sheer volume of apps and developers that Apple has to deal with, even the smallest of hiccups can become quite frustrating for those developers out there who invest significant amounts of time and money into their apps and then hit a roadblock at full speed. There are still a number of issues with -- as well as improvements to -- the development process that need to be addressed, however, I believe it is an good sign to see that Apple is indeed listening and willing to make some changes to the process. It may only be one small step in the long road ahead, but I think many of the affected developers will agree that it was a step in the right direction.

Thanks to the developers who sent this in!

Rumor: Verizon Racing to Get 4G LTE Network Up for Q1 2010 iPhone and iTablet Launch?!

News, Rumors, iPhone, itablet, lte, rumor, verizon | Sunday July 26 2009 8:30 am | Comments Off

    Mac Touch Concept Rendering

Techcrunch reports sources claiming Verizon is racing to get 20-40 markets up and running on their 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network by Q1 2010 to coincide with an iPhone and iTablet launch.

Verizon is getting 60Mbps in 4G tests which is admittedly ZOMG fast, and since they’re going with LTE, this network will be theoretically compatible with AT&T and other GSM carriers also moving to the same technology.

And yes, it does sound too good to be true, but we won’t go all Leo Laporte on them just yet…

We know you want your iPhone on Verizon. But what about your iTablet. And are you willing to wait for LTE to get it? Let us know in our poll!

    [Thanks Icebike for the tip!]
