Ask TUAW: iTunes libraries, Mac data recovery, Snow Leopard on older Macs and more

    News, iPhone | Wednesday July 1 2009 6:00 pm | Comments Off

We're back with another edition of Ask TUAW. This time around we've answering questions about iTunes libraries, Mac data recovery, Snow Leopard on older Macs and more.

As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X (we'll assume you're running Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions.

    Daneel asks:

I'm running OS X 10.5.7 and Windows Vista (via Bootcamp) on my iMac 24". I was wondering if there was any way in which I could make the iTunes apps in both Windows and Mac use the same iTunes library. File access is not a problem as I've got the ntfs-3g driver on the mac side and mac drive on the PC side.

I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive. To make iTunes use this particular folder, I create an alias of the folder on the external drive and replace my iTunes folder located in Users> "User Name" > Music with the alias. iTunes has no problem with this setup.

You should be able to do the same thing in both the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. Just set an alias of the iTunes folder you want to use in Windows pointing to your Mac iTunes library and you should be good to go.

The 88 Records New Single Using Nothing But An iPhone, Available On iTunes

    News, iPhone | Wednesday July 1 2009 4:39 pm | Comments Off

One of my personal favorite bands, The 88 [iTunes Store], recently recorded an entire single using nothing but an iPhone and their instruments. The app they used is called FourTrack [our review] and the song is called "Love Is the Thing" [iTunes]. We could honestly go on and on about how cool it is that they published a song recorded entirely on the iPhone to iTunes, but it may be more succinctly explained in the video below. Enjoy!

Child Porn Found In iPhone App, Apple Losing Control?

    News, iPhone | Wednesday July 1 2009 4:32 pm | Comments Off

We really thought it would be difficult to get less classy than trying to push pornography in the App Store, but a new app has managed to reach a new low by unintentionally assisting in distributing child pornography. The incident illustrates just how little control Apple actually has over the content available in the App Store.

iPhone 3.1 Update Brings Non-Destructive Video Editing, MMS Options, Other Improvements

    News, iPhone | Wednesday July 1 2009 3:09 pm | Comments Off

Yesterday Apple seeded a beta of iPhone 3.1 to developers to test with their applications. Although not listed with release notes, iPhone 3.1 comes with quite a few noticeable improvements as well as bug fixes. Forum member 370GT pointed out that 3.1 now comes with the option to save edited video as a copy instead of overwriting the original. He also pointed out that the phone vibrates when you start moving icons, and Voice Control now works through bluetooth headsets. We've also noticed that boot time has been greatly improved.

Also noted yesterday, MMS is enabled by default in 3.1, although the required service option hasn't been enabled by AT&T.

Apple Updates MobileMe WebApps… A Little

    MobileMe WebApp New Look

Apple has once again made some service improvements to MobileMe:

We recently updated the web applications at me.com. In Mail, you can now see your unread message count in your Inbox and in each of your Mail folders, and forwarding or replying to HTML (rich text) messages now maintains the messages’ original formatting. In addition, there is a direct link to Help in the toolbar. See this support article for more details and a summary of other improvements.

Coming on the heels of WWDC 2009 related improvements, like Find my iPhone, MobileMe updates continue to more closely resemble the steady, iterative process that best suits the web applications model, rather than the big splashy event releases of classic hardware and software. Kudos to Apple for that.

Now how about that iDisk App? :)
