  • iPhone 3.0: Delete and Forward Individual SMS Messages

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 11:46 pm | Comments Off

Lots of the incredibly welcome changes in iPhone 3.0 seem to be little changes and this one is sure to please you frequent texters. From any SMS/MMS message, an "Edit" button has been added to let you select individual messages for deletion or forwarding in another message. This one really comes in handy for those who like to hold onto those SMS conversations, except for that one embarrassing, drunken text you sent to that one girl. You know who you are.

    Use wisely!

How to make iPhone videos sparkle with iMovie

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 8:00 pm | Comments Off

If you read my recent post about taking movies with the iPhone 3GS, you probably noted that I talked about the lack of editing capabilities on the iPhone with the exception of trimming the beginning and ending of your videos. What if you want to edit your movies, add titles or effects, or combine a bunch of short iPhone video clips?

Several of the comments left by TUAW readers asked the same question, and it's so easy to do that I decided to whip up a quick tutorial showing how this works. You probably have a tool on your Mac that can do the job for you with just a few clicks, drags, and menu selections. iMovie is the perfect easy tool for creating full feature films (just kidding) from individual scenes shot with the iPhone 3GS video camera. Here's how to do it.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Software Delayed by Dev Team

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 5:22 pm | Comments Off

    macbook_stop_jailbreak

Sad day it is for all of you jailbreak fiends out there. The Dev Team has come out to let you all know not to expect a iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution any time soon. While they do have the software ready for prime time they are holding off on pulling the trigger to release it - for a few good reasons. The biggest reason being - Apple.

Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w. They need to fix some UI issues. 3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming. We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.

They also seem to be a bit worried about their exploit this time around and think Apple will definitely “fix” it rendering their software useless to people who purchase an iPhone after a fix is released.

Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones. If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.

So there you have it folks, all of you who are anxious for a iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution will have to exercise a bit of patience. For the full scoop head of to the Dev Teams blog.

Our weekly interactive podcast goes live at 10pm Eastern this evening, and it's going to be a potluck night on the show -- you bring whatever you want to talk about, and we'll bring our own casserole of TUAW news from the last week. We'll definitely talk about the new iPhone 3GS: how fast it is, how Find My iPhone really can help you find your iPhone, five things you might not know about the phone (if you didn't read that post yet), and, errr -- how fast it is. The speed is such a big story we'll talk about it twice!

Plus, you'll probably hear us wax poetic on how much we love the mini, and we'll talk about our "stickiest" iPhone applications -- apps we just can't help but load up that "one more time." Should be a lot of fun -- definitely tune in and join us at 10pm Eastern this evening over on TalkShoe.

To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, or you can try out the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VOIP lines (take advantange of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *-8. Talk with you then!

Recording support for the talkcast is provided by Call Recorder from ecamm networks.

    Don’t try this at home

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 8:00 am | Comments Off

Or at the pool, or at the beach. It seems a French fellow was proud of his new iPhone 3GS and was taking pictures around the pool when the sort of inevitable happened. Yup, in the drink. Amazingly, the iPhone survived the underwater ordeal, and even recorded [YouTube link] the trip. Allegedly.

I wouldn't recommend this as summer entertainment. The iPhone in question had a tight rubber case, and my guess is while the video did record OK, the moisture in the phone will eventually take a toll.

There are a few water-tight cases for the iPhone, and we road tested an Otterbox Defender case back in April. Perhaps this fellow will invest in such a case should he go iPhone diving in the future.

Now of course the video might be a fake (I would have expected to see water on the lens for example), but at least it's an entertaining weekend diversion. Click through to the second half of the post to see the video.

iPhone 3.0: Case of the Missing or Incorrect App Icons

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 6:38 am | Comments Off

iPhone 3.0 Missing or Incorrect Icons

Way back in the elder days of iPhone 3.0 Beta 5, there was some discussion on Twitter about how apps would have an incorrect icon, or would be missing an icon altogether. Since the iPhone 3.0 betas were private and not public, TiPb didn’t post about it as that’s just not how we play cricket. Private betas will have bugs, get those bugs reported, and hopefully have those bugs fixed by the time the software goes into general availability.

However, TUAW highlights that this particular bug is still biting iPhone 3.0, even in the release version. Now, as then, if you have an app that’s missing an icon or has the incorrect icon, you can try to reboot your iPhone, delete the app and download or sync it back on, or wait for Apple to fix it in a 3.0.x update.

Meanwhile, you can let us know the funniest app mishaps iPhone 3.0 is giving you in the comments below.

The final obstacle between the hordes and the gate is you, the Hero General of the empire.

Stick It - iPhone Sticky Notes

    News, iPhone | Sunday June 28 2009 1:59 am | Comments Off

Stick It is a great list/memo app that's easy to use and more importantly, super fast to access. When your arms are full, the last thing you want to have to do is unlock your phone, scroll through your apps, and wait for your to-do list to load. While those things really don't take THAT long to accomplish, it can be a real hassle while trying to juggle a baby and a shopping basket. Developer Mark Peterson has created an app that can completely replaced the iPhone's default, Notes. All you have to do is make your note and then post it as your device's wallpaper.
